Key dates
Boring! But important, particularly for voters who:
Are not yet enrolled or who need to update their enrollment
Intend to apply for and lodge a postal vote
Intend to cast a pre-poll vote
For most voters, however, the main date you need to remember is Election Day on Saturday, September 4 from 8am - 6pm.
Monday, July 26
6pm: Close of roll for the purposes of being a candidate, nominator and roll printing.
For voters, this is the deadline for enrolling to vote so that your name is printed on the electoral roll.
Note: It is possible to vote if you have missed the enrollment deadline. We may point you towards information about this closer to the election (the information is available at the NSW Electoral Commission at any time). However you really should ensure your enrollment is completed (or updated if required) before this deadline - apart from anything else, voting will be much quicker and easier for you if you do so.
Tuesday, July 27
Lodgement of postal vote applications open.
You can apply to make a postal vote from this date.
Wednesday, August 4
12 noon: Close of nominations and close of registration of candidates and groups.
This doesn’t directly affect voters except to note that we will not finally know the candidates until some time after this deadline.
Thursday, August 5
10am: Conduct of ballot paper draw.
This determines the order that candidates will appear on the ballot paper. It is conducted as a random draw. Think of it as a bit like the Lotto draw! Sometimes getting a top spot on the ballot can be important as the top listed candidate may benefit from a “donkey” vote - votes made by disinterested voters that simply number the squares in the order of the ballot paper.
Monday, August 23
Pre-poll voting period opens.
Monday, August 30
5pm: Close of postal vote applications.
Friday, September 3
Close of pre-poll voting period.
Saturday, September 4
Election Day.
Polling stations are open 8am - 6pm
We have selected dates and events listed on the web pages of the NSW Electoral Commission that are important mainly for voters. However there are other dates and events that are important for electoral participants (such as the candidates, political parties, party agents and so on) that we have not listed. Details may change after this is posted. You should refer to the NSW Electoral Commission for the latest and most authoritative information.
We do our best, but if you see anything that is incorrect please let us know so that we can correct it.
